Physical Examination of Foot and Ankle
Ko Young-Jin

Kim Hye-Won
Abstract
Among the various activities of daily living (ADL), locomotion is the most basic and essential factor in leading an independent life. Foot disease is an often overlooked entity which may interfere with this activity and calls for special attention to its exact diagnosis and early treatment. To meet the increasing number of patients with foot disease and the need for accurate diagnosis and therapy, comprehensive understanding of physical examination of the foot and ankle is of paramount importance. Although lower extremity lesions other than the foot could provoke symptoms distally down to the foot area, foot symptoms are more frequently attributable to lesions within the foot. The foot has the structural advantage for being easily exposed to the surface allowing direct diagnosis through simple physical inspection and excludes further costly and time-consuming evaluations; therefore, thorough physical examination and careful history taking are key essential factors. In order to diagnose and treat foot disease accurately, the physician should always carry out these procedures in a scrutinized and systemic manner and also possess extensive knowledge on basic foot anatomy and biomechanics.
